Advance Housing, Inc. is proud to announce that on September 26, 2006, at the Governor’s Conference on Housing and Community Development, the agency received the 2006 Governor’s Award for Housing Excellence in Supportive Housing. The award was received for the “Lakeview Country Homes” project located in Sparta, New Jersey. The project allowed nine individuals to receive permanent affordable housing. Lakeview Country Homes is an expansion of Advance Housing’s Sussex Country Supportive Living Program and is comprised of three 3-bedroom single family homes for homeless persons living with a mental illness. Each house provides three new permanent shared living opportunities with each resident having their own bedroom and bathroom. Advance Housing, Inc. owns all three properties and rents them to eligible low-income consumers. The properties are existing residential properties that needed moderate rehabilitation. All of the houses are located in close proximity to public transportation, employment opportunities, shopping, recreational facilities, and other community amenities. In addition, two of the three houses are part of lake communities which provides additional social and recreational opportunities for the residents.
The project is designed specifically for the needs of low income adults living with a mental illness by being both affordable and integrated into the community. Shared living allows individuals to afford to live in neighborhoods that they would otherwise be priced out of. Flexible and responsive services are available to all individuals, including psychiatric services, supportive counseling, medication management, case management, crisis intervention, and transportation to community appointments. Services are consumer driven and are intended to further the consumers’ ability to achieve housing stability and community integration. Normalized community living, including participation in the care and maintenance of the property, is likely to assist consumers living with a mental illness to live a fulfilling life and to reduce the overall stigma attached to having a disability.
