Advance Housing, Inc. is one of the foremost agencies assisting consumers living with a mental illness with affordable housing. The agency has been successfully placing consumers in affordable neighborhood housing for the past 10 years. In October 2006 the agency celebrated its 10th Anniversary, honoring the past and anticipating the future.
Advance Housing was established in 1996 by a consortium of mental health providers in a collective response to the housing crisis confronting low-income consumers. Ten years later, Advance Housing is a recognized leader in the development of affordable housing opportunities for consumers living with a mental illness. The first homes were scattered site apartments secured with the financial support of the New Jersey Division of Mental Health Services. Today, the agency runs a combination of apartments, condominiums, and shared living residences in Bergen and Sussex counties. A comprehensive array of flexible and uniquely tailored services has been the key to Advance Housing’s consumers’ success in achieving housing stability, through such innovative programs as the Affordable Housing Resource Center, the Supportive Living Program, the Homeless Services Team, and the Advance Consumer Choice & Empowerment program. Now, over 125 consumers are living independently. During the last 10 years Advance Housing has taken a proactive approach and continually grown and expanded permanent supportive housing opportunities for consumers living with a mental illness.
Advance Housing has been a model for other agencies in the field of housing and mental health. The agency is looking forward to placing even more consumers in affordable housing and to helping end chronic homelessness within the next 10 years, which will be an accomplishment to celebrate at our 20th Anniversary. |
